Building Wealth Through Community: Commún’s Economic Vitality Program
Commún's Economic Vitality Program helps local residents navigate barriers to economic stability through initiatives led by program managers Danielle Short and Alyah Fadel. The program focuses on building community wealth, promoting equity, and addressing challenges such as language barriers, digital literacy, and workforce development—all while ensuring that residents feel connected to their community and have the resources to thrive. “The Economic Vitality program aims to ensure people can afford to live in the community and feel like they belong there,” explains Danielle. This focus on inclusivity is especially important due to concerns about displacement, as new developments threaten to price out long-time residents.
Economic Viability
Choosing to focus on local economic viability, the program helps residents increase their income, either by securing living wages or expanding business opportunities. A key part of the initiative is addressing barriers to education and employment, with resources designed to build English language skills. Danielle shares, “We started with English classes, initiated by a community member, and added a unique language exchange where community members practice both English and Spanish.” This collaboration fosters mutual support while giving residents practical language skills they can use in daily life.
Digital Literacy
Digital literacy is another cornerstone of the program, equipping residents with the skills needed to navigate today’s digital world. As Danielle explains, “Digital literacy is actually a social determinant of health. If you don’t know how to use email or fill out online applications, there are so many resources you’ll be cut off from.” These digital skills open doors to education, employment, and vital services.
Alyah emphasizes the program's whole-person approach: “We’re not just focusing on jobs or wealth. We’re addressing language and digital barriers first, giving our community the tools to access better life opportunities.”
Workforce Readiness Programs and Community
The team also develops workforce readiness programs like resume writing, interview prep, and addressing industry-specific requirements. Danielle notes, “People in the community are incredibly resilient. Many have figured out how to support their families despite structural barriers. Our vision is to connect those dots and match their skills with opportunities.”
The program’s success is rooted in collaboration. “Our community is growing, getting more educated, and exposed to new opportunities,” says Alyah. “This process is exciting for us as staff because we’re learning and growing alongside them.” The new community center at the Loretto Heights campus will further strengthen this collaborative spirit, involving residents in both their learning goals and the construction of a space that will serve them for years to come.
Reflecting on the work, Alyah says, “It’s not the typical dry economics work. It’s dynamic. I’m surrounded by people asking questions, requesting resources, and you see their excitement.” Through these efforts, Commún’s Economic Vitality Program is helping build a resilient, educated, and empowered community in southwest Denver, well-equipped to navigate the challenges of today and tomorrow.
