From Seeking Help to Leading Change: Meet Community Member Sabah Almobarak
Sabah Almobarak joined the Commún community in 2023, first arriving in search of food assistance when her mosque’s food bank ran out. There, she reconnected with a familiar face, Michael—a volunteer at both her mosque and Commún—whose friendly dedication inspired her to get involved.
“Everyone welcomed us and made us feel included,” she recalls. She and her daughters quickly became dedicated volunteers, giving their time and energy to support the organization and their neighbors.
At that time, one of Commún’s initiatives was to provide financial assistance for rent and bills, filling critical gaps left by other agencies.
“Most places help for a few months and then leave people hanging,” Sabah explains. Commún stayed.
Recognizing the depth of their impact, she eagerly spread the word, bringing friends and neighbors into the community.
Seeing Sabah’s natural ability to educate and uplift others, Commún offered her a role as a community leader. Now, she works closely with the organization, in addition to dedicating around five hours a week to connecting people in her community with vital resources. She regularly drives as many friends and neighbors as she can fit in her car to appointments, classes, and support services.
“Working with Commún has given me more responsibility than ever,” she says, sharing that she previously worked primarily in childcare. Sabah’s organizing spirit doesn’t stop when she leaves Commún. At home, she is a trusted connector, helping neighbors navigate services across the city. “I’m grateful to Commún,” she says. “I didn’t know I had this ability to help others until I saw the many ways they provide for people.”
